Nothing motivates an overdue remodel like a leak from a water heater. The affected areas included the laundry room and a walk-in pantry/mechanical closet, and the goal was to create a new spacious laundry/mud room and move the pantry into an improved kitchen at the same time. The stars aligned for each space by moving the door from the garage to flow through the new laundry room rather than directly into the kitchen. There were of course, load-bearing walls requiring new structural beams and major mechanical considerations. Moving the furnace was not a viable option, but relocating the electric panel a short distance made good financial and spatial sense. Front-loading washer and dryer on pedestals offered better ergonomics and bonus storage. A moveable storage bench was able to locate in front of the mechanical closet for an impromptu mud room while still allowing accessibility for yearly maintenance. Besides being pleasant to look at, bonus features include a built-in paper towel holder, hidden drying racks, double waste receptacle, a super lazy susan, drawers galore and floating shelves.
