Owners were seeking to contrast their summer residence nestled in a lush forest with a winter residence in a desert oasis. What they purchased was a decent house boasting a great location with good bones complete with mountain views and a pool. In their own words, they weren’t looking for someone who was an order taker, rather a designer who could listen, create and execute. I drafted a dream plan, complete with dream materials and a dynamite contractor to manage the project; they approved it and we got to work. The first task was getting the space to reflect the modern minimalist feel I was trying to create. Structurally, I eliminated all the arches (throughout the house) and tried to get rid of the walls in the great room but due to their bearing nature they were minimized but not completely eliminated. I had a door/window expert update all the openings in industrial black frames drawing attention to the spectacular mountain views Aesthetically, I added a monolithic 3D tile wall featuring a floating hearth in durable quartz, a linear fireplace you can operate with your cell phone and a recessed television with soundbar. A very simple concrete floor tile and a basic white paint carried throughout the entire house. I painted the wall opposite the fireplace dark grey to add some depth as the owners were very serious about bare minimum furnishings. I went with a classic George Nelson Chandelier over a basic Mid-Century table and chair set.
