This artist family finally got their mid-century modern home to renovate. It was truly a blank canvas with small rooms that didn’t flow together or function for their lifestyle. The winning design created an open floor plan that is colorful and efficient. The decision to knock down walls is never taken lightly, but the heart of the redesign was connecting the kitchen to the other spaces. Removing one interior wall would normally lessen storage, but we were able to add more than we were losing with storage solutions along the back of the island. Moving an exterior wall out 3-feet created an opportunity to make a multi-purpose room that would be the laundry, the pantry and a small bar. The family loves to entertain, and the large island is great for gathering or setting up a buffet. The small bar includes a mini refrigerator and helps keep the kitchen counter clear of small appliances. There are rollout shelves in the pantry and the large side stores all the food while the slim side houses all the paper products. Features of the kitchen cabinets are: tray storage, a pullout waste/recycle, deep drawers, spice drawers and hidden drawers. To say they weren’t afraid of color is an understatement and blessing in today’s world of white and gray. Shades of blues, yellows, and whites in different textures and sheens are all softened by a warm horizontal grain heartwood and set a backdrop for creativity and growth.
