After 4 design concepts of three different houses, we returned to the fixer-upper house and committed to a slightly less ambitious but no less exquisite design. To be able to refine and improve concepts we explored in the first designs and layer on more ideas as the whole house developed was a dream come true for both the client and myself. The original house started off with low grade builder quality materials and was very much a traditional design. It didn’t appear to have much going for it. Plans included more windows, recessing walls, combining rooms, moving showers and doorways and infusing spaces with color, and texture, and storage. There was a wonderful view to be had if we did our due diligence. In the kitchen, we expanded the window, stretched the island as long as we could and we punched into the library to add a bar and reimagined the pantry to be a dual purpose workstation. The hallway and pantry are unrecognizable and serves as pantry and a drop-off. For the primary bath we swapped the tub and shower for major improvements. The guest bath is the same footprint but you wouldn’t know it because if feels fresh . The biggest transformation came when we removed the fireplace to gain 180 degree mountain views and created an amazing entertainment wall that’s an art piece. When it came to materials, the client had a clear sense of the direction and wanted to have surprises of color in controlled spaces. We integrated multiple counter surfaces and finishes to give the subtle color palette more depth. Finally, a gourmet appliance list that a trained chef would be jealous of. If the third time is a charm, then the fourth time was enchanted.
